Prius, because if it is Hybrid like you said, you end up saving money on gas so it kind of works out after a while. :)

I can't believe how cheap those cars are! You can't find a Hybrid in Australia for under $40, 000 from what I've seen and Toyote Yaris Sedans would be around $25, 000.

The Yaris is a lot cheaper and still gets 35 mpg. I'd say it's the better deal. And it looks slightly less ugly.
EDIT: I voted "something else." Oh, and a Camry hybrid is like $3,000 more. And the non-hybrids are cheaper.

I say neither, why go for a 2007 car? 2005 or lower is better, not only is it cheaper, but you don't lose a few grand for driving it off the original property. Plus, seeing as its brandnew, you need to deal with all the problems and failures that company may have had.

My mother drove a Yaris for a while when her car was in for servicing, and she hated it. I couldn't honestly say that the Prius is any better, but I imagine the build quality would be slightly better (an assumption that I'm basing on nothing in particular). Still, I'd shop around a bit more if I were you.

So, on with the advice, IT'S LONG....
No go with the Prius. The hybrids batteries die, and then have to be replaced, which means $4000 down the drain, and all your gas "savings" is gone. Besides, the Prius gets about 44.6 MPG with average driving instead of the 60-70-80 MPG you hear about. Not much of an improvement over the 38 MPG that the Yaris or Echo gets. So, the Prius is not an effective alternative to a regular sole gas engined car. Neither is the Honda Insight.
BUT, that does NOT MEAN THAT I SUGGEST THE YARIS either. The Yaris incorperates the 1.5 Liter engine that is used in the Tercel and the Echo, which isn't exactly Toyota's strong point. The 1.5 liter cars are okay for durability and decent for gas savings. Usually they wear out around 100K, (if they haven't already had their share of problems), and just get worse over time. The Echo, Yaris, Tercel 1.5 cars are not the typical indestructable Toyotas. That's why their resale value is low.
I really suggest (sticking with Toyota) the Corolla. 37 MPG (not a huge difference form the Prius or Yaris), better resale value, better power, more features, more car, and best of all, it's a hell of a lot more reliable than the 1.5 cars. Corollas do have the track record for going 150, 200 and 250,000 miles, and they use a much better built 1.8 liter which gives off more power and torque.
Other suggestions, Mazda 3i or 3s (2nd best), Pontiac Vibe or Toyota Matrix. Ford Focus are solid cars but the MPG suffers from a powerful engine. Hyundai Accents (or Kia Rios) are decent cars for the money, but are unproven. Hyundai Elantras (Kia Spectras) are only acceptable with a Manual, but the MPG is subpar. Subaru Imprezas get only 26 MPG, but they have a lot of power for the car.
Do not get the: Honda Civic 06' (too many changes, so first year reliablility is poor), Volkswagen anything (horrible reliability), Nissan Sentra (below average reliability), Dodge Caliber (no resale value), or Chevy Cobalt (unreliable). That's just off the top of my head.

The Prius and Yaris are two cars I was considering getting myself.
The Yaris has the spedometer right in the middle of the dashboard, over top of the radio. EDIT: better picture: http://a332.g.akamai.net/f/332/936/1...ck.dsh.500.jpg This is one reason I would not get a Yaris. I think it would be difficult to drive like that. The 2007's may be different though.
I would be hesitant to get a Prius because it's so new, I'd be afraid it would break. But that's based on no research or hard data whatsoever. It may be worthwhile to do some actual research on reliability etc.
I'd probably drive them both and see which is more comfortable. If there's no noticeable difference, I'd get the cheaper one, or else the one that is smaller.

But anyway, about the Prius reliability, it's very reliable and many of them already have 140,000 miles plus. The conjunction of the electric motor and the gas motor is a very simple device, and the electric motor takes away the force initial that the gas engines usually have to deal with. It's a very reliable car, and more reliable than most.
Be careful about hybrids. I remember GM making some sort of press release about how, since the technology is so expensive still on them, that the gas advantage doesn't really make much of a difference in the end, as far as money goes. Though, if you're some kinda hippy and just don't want to use as much oil all-around, then go for it.

No, no go with the Mazda 6 for reliability reasons. This one is tricky cause only the Mazda 3 is made in Japan along with the 5. But the 6 is a Ford Fusion chassis with a the euro 3.0 V6 or the duratec 2.3, so the reliabilty is below average for the 6. Not bashing anyone, just felt that I needed to speak up.

Toyotas make some of the best cars in the world today, so unless Renault has picked up the production standards since last I drove them, I doubt they'd match a Toyota. (I'm no Toyota freak, I own nothing but Dodges) But about the Renaults anyway, we don't have them here in the U.S. in terms of new ones. We do have the Eagle Renault Medallions that were utterly useless pieces of crap, and they are 17 years old at the newest. However, I'd sure like to get my hands on a Clio V6 24V, if I could. Thems be sweet.
And about the Malibu, why? Okay, they're nice looking, but that's it. I'm surprised they still make them, cause the 1st gens were subpar cars, and the 2nd gen are just unreliable. According to the official studies, JD power and Consumer Reports stated that the Malibus were "Way below average" in terms of problems per 100 vehicles. Then, there's the repairs that I've seen them go through. I'm a former GM service technician, and I saw a lot of Malibus come in, and not just for oil changes.
But if you mean a 67' Malibu SS convertible 327, hell yes!!

buy a Toyota Corolla. It's infinitely reliable and I thinkt he cheapest car to own since it rarely has problems, the parts are cheap, it gets good gas mileage, and it doesn't have too many frills.
I will concur with eesty's selection. Corolla's as cheap as the Yaris and a well-known reliable car. It gets ~35 mpg (same as the Yaris), and has the benefit of not being nearly as ugly.
I drive a corolla and while I hate it in theory (All chinese drive corollas), I can't argue against fuel efficiency.

Someone mentioned Mazda's earlier in the thread. I test drove a Mazda 3 and a 6 before I bought my car. They're both awesome. My Sister-in-law bought a 6 and adores it.
I didn't end up buying either car, but it wasn't because I didn't like them. Hubbie works for Ford, which owns Mazda, but his discount on Fords was better at the time. :D

Check out the Mazda 5. I don't know anything about reliability, but they sure are nice for the "can't quite get an SUV" but "don't want a little car" people.
Most Mazdas are crap, but the 3, Miata and supposedly the 5 are good cars that are built in Japan. The 6, Tribute, MPV and RX-8 all suck.

I had a Taurus with 162,000 miles, and a Mercury Sable 213,400 miles with the original engine and tranny. But that was a Ford pushrod V6, not the flimsy DOHC belt driven euro imitation. Every company has their good and bads.
