I've never played this
And I honestly know nothing about this game. I think more than any other FF game it falls in the cracks and no one talks about it.
FFI - The original
FFII - Supposedly has a horrible fight mechanic
FFIV - One of the most well known
FFV - Faris and Buttz
FFVI - One of the most well known
And from there every game has been played and talked about to death.
Should I play this game? Am I missing out on anything really? If I did play it what would be the best version?

If you are to play it, play either the DS version or the Steam version. Psycho did a video series w/ the Steam version, which has the best graphics & a cleaner interface. But you can't go wrong w/ either one. While it's not my favorite, it's a fun, cute game. In fact, if I were you, I'd try to play them all. I think they're all on Steam now.
Be mindful that FFIII is one of the most difficult FFs (Phoenix Downs can only be found, not purchased, for example).
Also, FFII is most known for it's odd leveling system, it's battle system is alright.

I played the NES version and yeah this game is hard. The final dungeon will have you cussing.

I don't think the game is hard, it just requires lots of grinding. This applies to both the original NES version and the 3D remakes. If you don't want to play the NES version, I'd suggest trying the PSP version. It lets you do all the side quests without contacting your friends via WiFi (which the DS version requires), and the Auto-Battle has a fast-forward feature that is missing from the Steam version. The fast-forward is very useful since the 3D versions have extremely slow battles.
