Would anyone be interested in playing some D&D 5e? It could be done with an online tabletop equivalent and a mic/headset.
I think a regular campaign would be nigh on impossible, so I guess a one shot would work best. I'm guessing a weekend would work best, and people can block out 4-6 hours in advance to really make a go of it.
Feel free to throw out thoughts, volunteer to be DM (god help you) and post what kinda times you're available and let's see what we can pull off.
I have never done any proper d&d (my friends and I tried it once, but none of us had ever played before, so it wasn't fantastic), but I am endlessly interested in giving it a go.
However my availability is... tentative at all times, so I don't want to say what weekends I have available because it is subject to change. If we get a decent bunch I will pencil in the time and make sure I'm about though.
Yeah, I’d be up for this but I’ve never played it before. I’m free most evenings but weekends are probably better for everyone I think with time differences.

Are you thinking of using a platform like roll20? Something like that would be fun.
Our next step is to find out everyone's availability. To that end I've made a Google doc. Please fill out your timezone and broad availability. From there I'll try to find a date and timeslot that suits as many people as possible.
I have put down really broad times for me, eg from 3pm to 2am on a Saturday, but I have no intention to actually play for 11 hours straight. I'm just really flexible and can fit my other stuff around D&D if I have a set time in advance. If I'm DM I'd try to make the session last around 4 hours, but I'd probably say to build in another hour or two to plans because it'll most likely go astray and people might want to take a break too.
At the moment I'd say we should still only plan for a one-off session and not entertain the thought of anything regular.

Saturday evenings are my own DnD night with my friends here so I can't ever do Saturdays. I DM so I spend the day prepping for the evening. I can do fridays whenever as I have fridays off. but Sundays I go to bed early as i get up early for the work week. And i sleep teh smurf in on sundays as well lol.
The week before and the week of thanksgiving I'm unavailable. Family stuff ya know.
I am honestly not the most commitment worthy any more if you spring it on me like day prior but if I know a for sure date I can base things around it.
I'm fine for any of the dates/times so far.
Saving for my New Zealand trip next year means my social calendar is significantly reduced.
I can do both, but the 8th will work better for me.
Totally fine to pick a time that excludes me rather than one that excludes others. I'm sure my zone is the hardest to work with in this group. I'll try to make it if I can. Early starts are fine! My kids could listen in and I think they'd get a kick out of it. :)

A couple of quick questions: Do you prefer combat or RP? And would you like something serious or light hearted?
Also, is everyone comfortable rolling a character or would you like me to set one up for you? (You’d still have full control over name, appearance, backstory etc)
How long will signups be open for, if they still are? My schedule is kind of one day to the next at the moment.
Sign ups are definitely closed at this point. Including yourself, we have 7 people (Bubba, Chibi Youkai, Del Murder, DK, Freya, Jinx, Shauna) interested in playing and I think that's already pushing it. One of my IRL groups is a party of 7 and even with our really experienced DM it takes forever for us to do anything! We're thinking of breaking into a group of 3 and a group of 4.
However, I know Freya has said she's uncertain if she can definitely make it, and you've said that too, so my thought is that we're not actually going to get 7 people on the day. If we do, that's cool, we'll roll with it. We scan scale it for anywhere between 2-7 people - just know that with 7 people it'll take a lot longer!
I've never done this before so I plan to completely wing it. So I'm fine with what ever decisions Psy/the group decides. I do plan to study up a little before the day.

I'm playing an online game right now where we're using a blend of Roll20 and Discord.
It's been fun so far, and Roll20 keeps the monetary investment for players to a minimum. I'll ask my DM for links to the manuals and things he's sent us so we could character build if you need those.

Though my only experience with D&D outside video games is DMing some 3.5 campaigns. Granted, I was very poor at it and never fully grasped all the systems, but I think I know enough of general D&D to just... get by as long as the DM does his job well :p

But, uh, they're a little long. :erm: There's a lot of videos flying around, and you can also watch videos of groups of people actually playing eg Critical Role to get the general vibe too.

Bubba - Half-Elf Bard
Del Murder - Human Rogue
DK - Tiefling Warlock
Jinx - Dwarf Barbarian
Shauna - Gnome Wizard
We're a liiiiiittle light on the physical combat aspect and Bubba is the best healer but beyond that I think there's a good set up.
Pick the same classes you enjoy in vidya RPGs and might enjoy roleplaying as? RP'ing should be a much larger aspect of a campaign than in video games. So you might want think about the type of personality/background/etc that sounds fun to play to you.
DnD can be a lot of different things, but in my experience it works out to be a combination of this joint effort by the forum, and numbers based combat/interaction/exploration/skill development.
Since this is a short, single-shot campaign, it might work out to be a lot more combat focused than normal. That's not how it has to be. It could be largely a puzzle, or something more based on the social aspect of people-problem solving.
If you're new, picking a magic user class or other classes with several different resources to keep track of may feel tedious or over-whelming. There's more paperwork to keep track of. A more straight forward class like fighter or barbarian might be good to get your feet wet with. Don't let that scare you away if you really want to try another class though. It all flows together well once you familiarize yourself with it.
EDIT: Also, barbarian and rogue make good partners. Del and Jinx should have fun working together with a little coordination/communication.

I'm reading through the manual and getting a good sense of how this works. It is very detailed! How much do I need to keep track of on my own and how much is handled through Psy or an app? Should I come up with my own backstory (which I could do) and stats (probably not a good idea!) or will that be done for me? I am used to video games that handle all that stuff for me! As for the rping, combat, and making decisions, I believe I got the gist of it. It does look like Rogue plays pretty straightforwardly so I appreciate giving me something I can handle. And yes, it seems mandatory that I go for Enforcer.
Keep rolling until you get 18 in every stat. It’s the only way to play.
I've used the standard formula for stats and rolled everyone's character sheet for them. I'll send them all round to everyone shortly. As for backstory, yes, go for it! You'll see a few personality traits are on the character sheet but you can be as flexible as you want with it.Quote:

D&D's beauty is in its freedom and flexibility so I'm happy for people to be creative. With that said, I don't have an entire world prepared! There's an adventure there for you and it's up to you if you want to follow it. If you don't then... well... there really isn't much else.
If people want to be dicks then they have the freedom to be dicks, but that doesn't mean freedom from consequence. If you want to piss all over the tavern, fine, but the burly barkeep is going to beat the trout out of you. If you go on a murder spree, the town guard are either going to kill you or put you in jail. Although who knows, maybe you could convince them not to. :greenie:
Following what Fynn said, I've known everyone for years. I have every confidence that nobody is going to take things personally if they don't get things their own way all the time, or go out of their way to ruin someone else's day. I want you all to have fun! You dumb dumbs all mean a lot to me, in your own way. Maybe.
Perhaps to set the ground rules, PVP isn't going to be a thing so you can't attack each other, and stealing each other's best weapon is a no too. If you want to have some banter or play some pranks (I will be disappointed if nobody casts a spell to make it sound like Bubba is farting at an inopportune moment) that's perfectly okay though. It's up to you if you're comfortable with that beforehand.
Oh, and no smurfing weird sexual trout. Yes, you. You know who you are.

Best way would probably be to load up OBS, and just have it recording.
Are you guys doing it in discord, I could make a special voice room for you. I may be able to let people come in to hear but if they're not in the party, they may not be able to talk. I can look at the permissions if I can do that. Cause I'd like people to be able to listen but not pop in and interrupt things. Unless you're all doing it via roll20's voice I dunno how that works. I've used Roll20's audio before. It's pretty shaky some days. And gods help you if you accidentally refresh the page.
It might actually help to try and have everyone try to make sure their roll20 account and the discord group you'll be working in is all ready to go ahead of time.
The first time a group I was in tried it, the first session was 90% trying to get people's audio to work, or trying to get their discord to refresh, or other issues.
That increases my likelihood of actually being able to make it there then :monster:
But yeah, a Discord voice chat room where people can enter to listen in sounds nice. It would kind of make it even more of a community event.
My thought is this - I will start up the Roll20 game at 4pm. As with all good D&D adventures, it starts in a tavern. At 5pm, someone - or something - will burst into the tavern and set all those who are present on their merry way.
Players can use that hour to get used to the system and make sure all sound issues are resolved. They can mess about in the tavern, interacting with its staff and patrons, get to know their own character and each other's, and there may even be an easy tutorial battle or two to get into the swing of things.
The 4pm - 5pm section is optional, so come by 5pm at the latest but I can't really pause for everyone else if you have sound/tech issues.
Well I made a chat room and a voice room in discord. If you're given the "DnD" role you can talk in it. Otherwise, you can only listen. IF roll20's audio doesn't work.

Seconding the love for Furniturebane. I love how a couple of pieces of flavour on missed attack rolls just suddenly spiraled into a key part of her identity and I hadn't expected anyone to name their weapon at all, so it was awesome seeing it pop up in the damage roll.
My favourite moment is probably a weird one but I just really liked Bubba marching over the bridge to enter into negotiations with a giant crocodile. That's such a strange combination of words to put together! I had no idea you guys would try to talk to it. And then I like that when he got there it was just "So... giant crocodile... how's it going?" because I mean what do you even say to one?
I also loved Del's improvised attack on the enlarged bear and would've been great had the dice been in his favour because it was just so cool and inventive. Hopefully the way he took it out in the end made up for it a little.
Oh, and Shauna is a prime method actor. The smurfing dedication to have that Gnome be a perpetual ball of motion. Bloody hell. And the Academy Award goes to...

Great campaign Psy. I can tell it takes a lot of work to put these together. You are the true MVP. I wonder how many things we didn't discover (like where that second path went...).
Later that day I went through the campaign again, this time with my kids. Son was Hammer, daughter was Schmaltzy (complete with dances), I was Frimelda, and our 18 month boy was Marmaduke. They really enjoyed it as well. In our run they decided to fight the crocodile instead of talking to it and spent several in-game hours eating every scrap of the orc's melted candy stash.
I absolutely love that you did that. That's fantastic! I hope they had a whale of a time.
I think the general consensus was that people might like to play again, but given what a massive timesink a session is, probably only once every 2-3 months or so. I'm happy to DM for this group again though I'm also happy to join the party if anybody else wanted to take the wheel.
I appreciate there are a few people who posted in the thread and wanted to join but for various reasons couldn't. Realistically there's room for only one more person in this party to give it a bit more rounding, but any more and I think we might be pushing it a little unfortunately.
I'd be happy to run the same session as last night for a new group of people if schedules can align. It's all set up and ready to go on my Roll20 account so it'd be very easy for me to do. I had a great time last night so I'd be glad to do it all again!
It was tough to carve out this block of time (that one break really helped actually) so I may be iffy for future installments. I did like it and want to continue, but if there were others interested I can give up my slot without much worry.

I'm thinking of a game of Rifts I played yeeeeears ago where I was a door-to-door salesman dinosaur named Mr. Smiley. (It was a short session from a long time ago, so details are vague.) Silly things like that can still bring a smile to your face much later.
So I've had some thoughts on a next game. Would you guys prefer a heist situation with wacky schemes and social interaction or a spooky puzzle mystery with fiendish traps and scary foes?
I am also probably thinking January or February.

I'm kind of at a very chaotic moment with my job right now, but overall it doesn't look like any of the dates should be an issue. I might end up having to go on a conference during either of those two weekends, but even then that would be a Saturday, not a Sunday. I don't do anything on Sundays, usually, so my attendance once again depends solely on when my kid decides to go to bed.

I don't know how likely it is I'll catch anyone now but hey here goes nothing - I'd still like to have a couple more players even if you've never done this before and have no idea what you're doing. You'll have something resembling fun on occasion, I promise!
So we didn't have enough players for today so I've postponed until next Sunday 15th when it will definitely for sure be happening even if there is just one person that wants to play. As always, it's cool if it's not workable for everyone, I will be working on ways to balance the game depending on number of characters. Sorry to everyone... and I look forward to brutally murdering you next week!
