1. It cost a fortune to make (somewhere around $200 million). It was going to have to work hard to break even to begin with.
2. It was animated, thus turning away the adult market who had come to...

Or I would miss it if I still played Warhammer.
That's Wild Arms
This is the correct answer. That being said, I don't think we've really had a FF game yet that you can really call science fiction. FFXIII looks like a possibility.
They're pretty different. They're actually RPGs for one, as opposed to JRGs which are just adventure games with a leveling system.
But then, this is why I prefer JRPGs to actual RPGs: Role...

The battle system sounds hilariously gimmicky. I hope there is more to it than what that article implies.
A re-creation of a joke that's existed forever. Totally thread-worthy.

Considering most of the character development in the game is sacrificed so Square could run rampant with the whole 'SquallxRinoa' thing, it would be a little sad if that wasn't the most likely paring.
I imported it from Japan. And no, it probably won't reach the US.
Star Wars Episode I: Racer
Bomber Man 64
Mortal Kombat Trilogy (N64 version)
Xenosaga Episode II: Jenseits von Gut und Böse
Xenosaga I & II (DS)
One half-decent theme song does not a good soundtrack make.
Which is kind of my point with the FFVIII soundtrack as well.
Not really. There are a few decent tracks in there but the more prominent ones that you'll be listening to for the majority of the game (battle theme, world map, most of the location music etc) are...
