Considering blonde is one of three natural hair colours (blonde, black and brown, excluding grey since that's an old person's hair colour and therefore unlikely to be featured on a young male protagonist), I think the examples you point out make up about a third of the FF series so I think it makes for a good statistical spread of hair colour . Besides, even if what I just said is complete bull, its just hair colour (By repetative, do you mean stupid? I would say that Could (in VII BTW, not VIII) and Tidus fit that pattern fairly well, but Zidane does not.)

Cliche's are great for immediately recogniseable characters. Just think of how much we'd have to think of, say, Squall's character to assign him an emotional role if it was not so very damned clear he's emo. Cliche = timesaver
