So what's the point of daggers?
There are so few daggers and no one's main weapon is a dagger. I just bought Cecil the dancing dagger and it actually lowered his attack (he had a mithril/silver sword before that). Sure some magic users like Rydia and Palom can use them, but whats the point if they are going to be in the back row? And for those who aren't magic users and can use them, there is almost always a more powerful weapon that can be equipped at the time. A total waste if you ask me.
Quite honestly, daggers are the cats pajamas!
You cant have an FF game without daggers, even if no one uses em.

They've become as much of a Final Fantasy symbol as Crystals, Chocobos, Half-Naked Women, Cross-Dressing Men and so many, many more things.
The Assassin Dagger is strong.
I think they're suppose to be the basic weapon of the game. It's kind of like the weapon version of a Cloth, Cap, or Iron Ring.
Daggers are weapons that all party members can use. As such it means that even if a person's specialised weapon isn't available, a weapon type can still be used. Also certain daggers have special effects attached to them, such as the Dancing or Assassin daggers. While for most of the game a character's main weapon is stronger than any dagger, there are a few exceptions. Both Palom and Porom benefit greatly from using a dagger in terms of physical damage compared to their staves/rods.
As another side note, AFAIK all characters can use a bow.
Also Yang can't equip any weapons besides claws.
