Birds were created on the fifth day, as there is no mention of eggs anywhere in the Bible, it is assumed that the chicken came first. This is a Creationist view.
Through Evolution, it can be assumed that the egg was laid by a chicken-like bird. A chicken was then hatched from this egg, in which case the egg came before the chicken.

The only reason the question remains unanswered is because there are too many people with views and an inability to agree with each other. Or even agree to disagree. The answer depends entirely on your beliefs in God vs. Science.
