How do I get out of Penumbra and to Umbra? I really want that Ultima Blade.
You have to light up those pedestals located either to your right or left upon entering any of those 4 rooms by placing a number of Orbs into them. Each pedestal has a required number of orbs needed. You can get Orbs by killing fiends. Once you light them all up, you can now have access to the lower rooms.
The book says that the Ultima Blade is in the Pharos Penumbra, but I found mine at the next lower level.
Do I need to fight that Phoenix Boss too?

As for the Pharos... You need to get 3 black orbs (those blue floating lights) and put them on the 3 pedestals. This will open the Door of Night, where you will fight a boss.

I've looked at a map on GameFaqs that shows where it is supposed to be but it never spawns there. Is there something I need to do first to make it spawn?

really? i just went to the place and it was there.....
but just to let you know, i dont think you have to beat Pheonix to move on, just get balck orbs and place them on the pedastals so that the room is birghtened, and its in the north end
