I never really understood how Cloud became the FF poster boy for 'emo-ism'. He doesn't really display any of the stereotypical characteristics during the game at all.
Of course, in AC he was so emo you might as well have handed him a smurfing razor blade so he can end it (ie both his life and that awful movie) right there and then, so it's probably more to do with that than the original game itself.
