ISP and Browser question

All you people who know more about this than I do: I have a question. My parents are thinking about getting high-speed internet service. Our choices are between AOL DSL and a cable connection. My parents want it so that AOL is the only browser available for internet usage. What I proposed to do would be to remove the TCP/IP support for the high-speed connection from Internet Explorer and enable Network Adiministration on the computer so the settings can't be changed. Would that successfully cut IE out from the cable connection without the possibility of someone being able to re-instate it without the administrator's password?

I have no idea what you're talking about, but someone else might.

(This'll get a better response in the Help forum.)

Hmmm.. I do quite understand what you mean, but I wouldn't know how to do that. However, the disable IE completely, go to internet options in Advanced and check the "Disable IE icon on the desktop" or something like that. Then remove iexplorer.exe (make a backup of it first) and no one will be able to use IE anymore.
Then install AOL and you'll be using that for internet.

However, removing iexplorer.exe may not be a good idea. Maybe there's someone here who knows more about it than I do. Sorry that I couldn't be of any help, regarding to your question.

Easier solution - get a firewall and tell it to deny IE all access to the net. I've done that on my machine, but with Netscape instead.

I recommend Tiny Personal Firewall if you like to get your hands dirty with all the rules, and for morecomplex configurations, or ZoneAlarm if you want the simple approach

EDIT: I wouldn't recommend removing IE from your machine, seeing as its fairly integrated into later versions of Windows - you could mess something up if you do.

Yeah... Windows is shaky enough as it is. I don't think it'd be good if you kicked any more supports out from under it.

What's wrong with IE using the net though?

    Hmmn..
If you don't know who I am you were clearly of single digit age when I stopped posting on this forum.

    I'm old skool.

..and FF8 is clearly still the best.

My parents want to keep the AOL parental controls, and IE has none. They want to make sure that if we get high speed internet there is no backdoor. (I have younger siblings who need supervision)

After some of my younger siblings were caught going to porn sites, my mom wanted to ban them from web sites until someone confessed. So we tried using Internet Explorer's block web sites without a password feature. Since AOL uses IE directly for a lot of its functionality, this disabled AOL browser access, and it prevented them from accessing AOL email. Lesson: IE's settings are useless for this.

We downloaded a trial of Norton Internet Security Family Edition, but it was kind of a pain, however, it did prevent them from going to web sites. Other than that, I don't have any ideas.

There is no way to peace; peace is the way.
