Now I was wondering what you lot though on the game overall. Is it worth me playing for fun and to see what started my favourite game franchise?

Give it a shot. It's a fun game to play. It's actually one of my favorites

Yes, it lacks a decent plot but the gameplay is great and very addicting! Its one of my favourites (origins version)
Okay. I'll give it a nice looking too as it did spawn the almighty franchise. ^_^;

Its simplicity will be both slightly humorous and refreshing.
My only complaint with it is that its quirks and oddities are rather... strange.

It's more realistic than four guys wandering the world with swords being completely invincible. In the later FFs you basically can't possibly die except from a boss, unless you fall asleep in the middle of a battle or fight something 20 levels higher than you should be fighting. Danger adds to the excitement.
Well seems to be mostly all positive response I'm getting so I think I shall be definately checking it out!

It's the best one, if you can handle it.
Most people are spoiled by the newer, dumber kind of games.
The FF1 plot is intricate, and impossible to understand, but if you follow it, you are almost unable to stop yourself from putting it together yourself. You create a wonderful tale all by yourself, almost, and it's usually a cool one, since you have cool basic characters and elements like Garland, the Sky Warriors, the orbs etc.
It is also a difficult game, but not impossible. There are many options for your characters and party combinations. And it's just kind of... fun. Plus, I like the language in the nes version.
I guess a lot of people don't appreciate the langiage for some reason or another. They think it's funny. I don't know why. The newer scripts are boring and cliche. I think people are kinda afraid of originality. Whatever.
The graphic upgrade is pathetically useless in modern versions. I don't know why they remake FF1 like an SNES game instead of putting it together like FFIX or something.
If you can get away from concerns about graphics and try the NES game, I think it is a very rewarding experience to many, but still a waste of time to others.
If you want to play Origins or GBA because of graphics and new scripts/styles etc, then play GBA and say you beat 1, just for the record. Not because you're looking for a good time. FFV is better to fit those needs.

And the GBA version is crap because they introduced an MP system and changed most of the game to make it easier, while the origins version is even harder than the original... in case you dont know, bosses in origins have twice the hp, and everything else is the same...(2000 hp warmech that regenerates 100 hp every turn is fun)
I'm sorry to hear that you are swayed by colors over gameplay.
But I'll bet anybody that if you play the NES version first, you'll like more than if you play Origins first. And if you play Origins first, you won't even give a damn about the game. That's my stand. Believe me or not.
I like the NES version better. Even the cute, and well done (for that time), graphics. Display isn't what makes a game, although it is an element. Besides, the new enemy graphics still aren't animated. A lot look like reshades of the originals, even. The classic feel of the NES version gets me every single time.
But I must admit that the sprites in the remakes are really, really nice.
