    Sony never made Final Fantasy, they just published Final Fantasy VII - Final Fantasy XII (and others like Final Fantasy Tactics).

    Final Fantasy started as the last-ditch effort of Square to make a game to stay in business, thus it was the "Final" Fantasy, or possibly the final game they would ever make.
