KH2: What are the shards for?

What are the shards for, I haven't found any use for them so far

If you're playing KH1 you won't be able to synthesize until you can use Green Trinity, which is gained after either Deep Jungle or Agrabah, I think. If it's KH2 you can do it once you get to Hollow Bastion.
