Is it possible to trade Poke'mon on Crystal and Gold when using GBA's?

So, a friend of mine and I have been trying to trade Poke'mon for a while, but it hasn't worked thus far. My version is Gold (For the Gameboy Color), and his version is Crystal (Also for the Gameboy Color), and we've been using Gameboy Advances and a Third-Party Link Cable. This Link Cable is a 2-Way, and it doubles as a GBA to GCN Cable, used for games such as Poke'mon Colloseum and Final Fantasy: Crystal Chronicles.

So, would this problem be in our method of trading, our systems used, or the fact that the Link Cable is abnormal in some ways? Thanks very much in advance.

I suppose.. well it must be the connection ?

Unless some very bizarre glitch has occured.

It isn't possible according to most sources I've read. I haven't actually tried it though.
