And yet it could be held by a frickin' White Mage in a previous game. Also this guy named Edge waved it about in his left hand while keeping an eye on his Murasame too. I'm just glad they didn't screw up the dialogue; in the Amano concept art Sephiroth really does look like a girl, but that's largely because Amano's artwork sucks.
