He pretty much states on his FAQ page that they're easy enough to do, and that if he can do them anyone can. Keep in mind some of the poses, like Black Mage with angry eyes, use quarter pixels, which some people (including myself) see as a big no-no.

Just find some rips of the originals, put them in Paint, zoom in as much as you can and experiment. It's not as hard as it seems.
