of course, it all depends on the reason you stepped down in the first place. If you stepped down because you didn't feel like doing the work, and were a complete arse about it, no I don't want you to have the job back, regardless. If you stepped down because of things beyond your control, well that's different. In this situation, it's the first one, it seems.
