I mean the storyline of ROTJ would've been darker and more cerebral if Han died after Leia thawed him out of the carbonite or if Luke died on the Death Star.

Luke's death would mean the extinction of the Jedi! That can't happen in a film about, and even titled, the Return of the Jedi. xO
