How do you use magic in Secret of Mana?

I defeated Spiky Tiger in Elinee's Castle a while ago, and I still haven't been able to use a single spell.
How am I supposed to do?

I believe you've already got your first spells from Undine correct? (It's been a while so I forget the exact progression of things.)

If the answer is yes, open your little chain menu on either the Sprite or Girl, then just cycle through them up or down till you reach the magic menu which should show an image of Undine (and later other spirits you gain spells from.) Select it, then the spell you want.

If you havn't met Undine yet then you gotta go to her place by the Water Palace and free her to get your first sets of spells. Though it's an event you can't miss, which you might not be up to just yet if I recall.
