Sonic was voiced by Steve Urkel therefore he wins.
I was obsessed with both of them when I was a wee lil' gamer. I'd have to choose Sonic, though, only because Knuckles isn't playable in Sonic CD.
Knuckles isn't really "fleet footed" :P But I prefer him anyway.

Sonic has always been a suave character, and while Knuckles had a pretty rad personality, his appeal was pretty smurfed when Sonic Team made him such a retard in the Sonic Adventure games, and gave him those find the crystal stages that were absolutely atrocious.
I like those treasure hunting stages. :( Knuckles was the first character I finished Sonic Adventure 1 with.
Knuckles has also seemed pretty suave. And yeah, don't bother with post Game Cube sonic. Sonic games suck when they get slowed down
