Yes but then if you don't want to buy the maps that means you'll have more trouble negotiating through an area, which is fine if as you said, you want to have to wander more to level up. However, you can't then turn around and complain about the game's geography being too extensive when you aren't even using the help that the game provides, especially when you just stated that you tend to have trouble finding your way. You're causing those problems yourself, not the game.

The game seems to have less than half the character dialogue as the others. So yes, you'll be yawning your way between cutscenes.

At least people who don't like that sort of thing don't have to sit through meaningless conversations. XII doesn't bore you with little talk, you can actually move onto the next part of a game without being bothered by pointless little things. Funnily enough, I wasn't yawning through cutscenes, so that can't be QFT.

Does it get interesting? I've no idea, I always skip past the half-hour long cut scenes to get back to the killing of monsters and such...

If I wanted to watch a movie of politics and such, I'd rent the animated version of Machiovelli's "The Prince".

Watching CGI of hooded figures sitting around a table for ten minutes talking about boring rubbish? Listening to a narration by someone reading a book about blah-blah-blah Old King Whoever? I'd rather have my gums scraped.
