Default Does this game actually get interesting?

I've been avoiding this forum in case I saw spoilers in any titles, but I'm getting less and less convinced that the story is interesting enough to actually *have* spoilers (note: I don't want to know any if it does)

I'd guess I'm about half way through the game? Just came out of "The Woods". It's the first time I've heard any decent background about any of the characters and the nearest it's come to even remotely emotional, and it seems like I've been playing forever.

Is it this dull all the way through? Where's the epic storyline, the deep and troubled pasts of the characters, the twists, the extra twists and counter twists, the excitement, the emotion, the feeling of immersion, the feeling of wanting to stay up all night with bleary eyes as you get completely hooked on the story and can't wait to see what happens next? The things that defined Final Fantasy. This is an FF by name, it's got moogles and chocobos, but to me it's just "not FF".

For the first time I'm in the middle of a new FF and I'm not excited. The gameplay is kind of fun, if you like the whole online-feel to the new battle system, but otherwise it's boring (and with the high level fantasy language, bloody hard work to follow. I keep having to re-read the Game Script at gamefaqs just to figure out what's going on.) Even FF8 was more interesting than this. I keep wanting to play VII or X to remind myself that yes, they used to be very very good.

Please tell me it's just really slow to get going?

Deep and troubled pasts of characters? It's actually nice for once this game focuses on something else. FFVIII, though good, lacked decent characters. FFXII's are far superior. I've felt a lot playing this game - I love the characters, storyline, music - shame everyone does not feel this way. People see things differently. *shrugs*

I can't honestly say when it will get interesting for you, because If I do say something, you may see it differently to me, and see it as dull D:

I bitch about the game a lot, mainly for the lack of story and weak characters, but it is still the best of the series out there.

To me, if I wanted a game that didn't have the FF classic deep and troubled pasts, cheesy love triangles, tear-jerking character development yada yada... then I'd have bought a different game These are the things that "defined" Final Fantasy for me.

But I suppose it's true enough that people want different things. I've always been one who enjoyed caring about the characters, and I have a very hard time caring about these at all, or even remembering their names half the time (mostly because we don't seem to get to know them)

Those things only really started in, like, VII. Maybe a little in VI.

Well, I'm a little bit further then you,... (SPOILER)just won my fight against the judge on mount bur omisace and I don't have the feeling that the story is dull at all. I really like it so far, and I can't wait to hear the rest of the story. And yes, when I were on the same point as you are right now, I actually knew a lot of Fran's, Basch's and Ashe's background. 3 out of 6, what more do you want?

Off course, it ain't the same story as it was in the earlier FF's, but I think that the storyline of FFXII is so unique, that you will appreciate it more when you actually completed the game. Don't know it for sure though, because I haven't finished the game yet

Don't feel bad Setzer. I remember all that stuff too and I love these characters. I had no trouble caring about these people, but I guess all people want in FF are angsty or chipper, bouncy ones. :/ To me that actually gets annoying and predictable after a while.

I thought it was a little bit slow to get going, but after a few hours I really got into it. Still, I definitely think they needed more character development. For example, I would've really enjoyed (SPOILER)a Basch flashback scene featuring him, Gabranth/Noah, and the fall of Landis.

The game seems to have less than half the character dialogue as the others. So yes, you'll be yawning your way between cutscenes.

To me it just seems that the world is bigger, if you know what I mean.
In FF8 I have to run around towns on the world map to get fights and get levels in this you have to run for hrs to even find a town.
There is less story because you're not just dropped outside the place you're supposed to go to next like you were in the other games (most of the other gmes anyway).
Especially for me because my sense of direction is terrible!! And i send hours walking in very big circles and not getting anywhere!!

And i can never remember Vaan's name i keep calling him Tidus all the time

So..is this either a good thing or a bad thing? Maps are there to help, and are pretty to easy to purchase usually.

As for never remembering Vaan's name..you just said it now..so...erm..haha..you DO remember it?

    don't be picky!!
and actually i think it's better not to buy a map cos you do more wandering which equals more lvls and LP

While I agree that more time spent developing the characters and story would have been good, as far as I'm concerned if they never write about the troubled crappy past of the main characters ever again, it'd be the best thing ever. I've seriously had far too much of the angsty male leads TROUBLED by the big evil villain who used to be their hero and then they found out the truth about them and BROKE THEIR WORLD. And VII is my favourite in the series, too.

We need more GALUF and BALTHIER'S, damnit.
