I found it to be the least plausible of all the moments in FFVIII (although FFX-2 has a worse one), but it didn't have to be. If the game script had made the GF amnesia and 'haven't we met before?' moments more integral to the story it would of felt a lot less like a deus ex machina scene. As written you can practically hear the plot machinery grinding away in the background.

I liked how unexpected it was :S

Irvine just suddenly starts talkinga about an orphanage, and Selphie and Quistis go HAY I KNOW THAT PLACE! and I'm just looking at the screen like WTF O_O when this all unravels xD

As much as I adore Quistis, some of the stuff she said to Squall was awkward and annoying. That being said, she still kicks Rinoa's ass.

It's the way they zoom each character into the camera (slowly) only for them to say things like "YES!". They were obviously trying to pull off a Y/R/P type thing, but it didn't quite work with the technology at the time.

Add in the Moomba going "rrrgh!" and you have a pretty dumb scene

Absolutely, that was pretty awkward and facepalm-worthy.

I really think that people over-rate the orphanage scene. It was a bit of a weak moment, but most stories have these moments. VII had one of the biggest plot holes in history. I'm referring to the story-time scene at Kalm, where Cloud fills in the whole Nibelheim story. Why does Tifa not step in at that point and say, "Hey Cloud, this story is wonderful, but you see, I was there, and I don't actually remember seeing you." Try explain that away.

& I think that some of the characters said some awkward things, but it wasn't like they were stepping out of character. Rinoa is someone who you could imagine saying MEANIE. Selphie is someone who would fall down. Irvine is a bit of a wuss. Squall is HUGELY troubled. And Zell is one of those people that everyone knew in school, the guy who tried too hard to fit in. He is almost as awkward as Ricky Gervais in The Office.

Anyway, dumbest moment in VIII is this: 'Back in the day, south of here, there used to be a small but beautiful village surrounded by deep forests. Everyone lived a happy life there.'
& when you get there, there's nothing there! Kind of like XII's story.

EDIT: I think Ultimecia & time compression aren't that dumb. Ultimecia & Squall are very different, both fearing that they will lose everything they care for. But Squall was able to overcome his problems and Ultimecia wasn't.

I do agree that Ultimecia should have been brought into the game earlier, and used more effectively though.

That's easily explained away - in fact, it's specifically addressed in the game. Tifa knew something seriously odd was happening to Cloud; ever since she found him semi-conscious in the train graveyard, she wanted to look after him and figure out what was going on. He talked weird, acted weird, and had inexplicable gaps in his memory, and inexplicable memories he shouldn't have. She didn't confront his fabricated memories because she was afraid of what would happen to him. Talking to her at various points - Kalm, Junon - shows that she's got real concerns about what he's been saying, but she tries to avoid the subject. So basically, her silence was due to her not wanting to shatter Cloud's illusions. And since only her and Cloud were actually at Nibelheim, why would the others believe her over him?

Zell's disturbing addiction to the cafeteria hot dogs. We don't know what they're made of here, imagine what they might be made of in a world where Ochus, Malboros, Wendigos, and Caterchipillars roam free.:sweatdrop

And I would take offense to people saying Squall is deeply disturbed but my test result came back as him so I'll say ...whatever.

    "No matter what happens,
even if you become the world's enemy
    ...I'll be your Knight."

You are correct, it is addressed in the game. Just like everyone forgetting they were at the same orphanage is addressed in the game.

My point is: is the explanation around Tifa's non-action any better than "the guardian forces made me forget". I think most stories have areas that are implausible, or are fixed through things like the GF made me forget. At the end of the day, VIII managed to use this weakness to reinforce the theme of companionship in the game - Yes, GFs made them lose their memory, but if they reminded each other, and remained friends, then they could overcome this. Just like later in the game, to survive time compression.

I think Square had some fun with the GF business though. Squall uses "the GF made me forget" as an excuse with Rinoa. That made me chuckle.

Yeah, that got me too. He's told to go to Lunar Gate (sorry, I mean [Lunar Gate]) to see Ellone; once he's there, they just tell him - out of the blue - that he's been expected, and that he'll be heading into orbit. You'd think a little prior warning would be expected...
