Thread: The dumbest moments in FF8

By MJN SEIFER: The fact that people dismiss the orphanage scene as "Deus Ex Machina"(sp?) purley because they didn't notice a ton of subtle clues leading up to it.
Such as Ellone clearly knowing both Squall and Quistis yet neither reconized her.

Irvine's comment to Selphie "We're destinied to be" on the train to Deling. Makes sense if you consider the fact that they somehow ended back together as adults.

Zell and Irvine not getting along too well. While playing once, I was in Balamb and I got that little event where Bad Rascal pushes the girl in front of the hotel. After I went into the hotel and back I talked to the guy and, with both Zell and Irvine in my team, got interesting dialogue hinting that Irvine had bullied Zell when they were kids

That's all I can think of right now for that.

Another dumb thing, is the simple lack of character development for everyone save Squall and Rinoa. I mean sure, they're the main central characters, but they completely ignored the others.

    3. The fact that people can't understand why Squall "suddenly fell for Rinoa" when there is NO SET TIME FOR THE GAME and that there where hints that he was devolping feelings for her as ealry as the parade.
    4. The fact that people dismiss the Gunblade becuase they can't understand the point.
    5. The fact that haters of this game practically force everyone to hate it - no other game has it that bad.
I agree with you on all points here. Sure it can be enjoyable to poke fun at the game's shortfalls, but people do tend to go too far - especially on the internet - with their hate-fuelled rage.

Yes. In fact, Yes^2. This is my only real issue with FFVIII (and FFX, for that matter). Some truly fantastic characters who get cattle-prodded into the background once the leading lord and lady take centre-stage. The likes of Quistis definitely needed more screen-time, and more real exploration of their story.

^ Agreed. Quistis actually seems quite a tragic character, none of the others seem to care about her much. She gets sacked from the instructor role and Squall tells her to go talk to a wall. It's revealed in the Trabia Garden scenes that she was in love with Squall but gave up when Rinoa came along. Everyone else had their individual passions and such, but her only identifier was as an instructor, which she no longer is.

Others have pairings... Squall+Rinoa, Irvine+Selphie, Zell+Pigtail. She's just left with her unrequited love for Squall.

Maybe it was my imagination but there seemed to be other subtle moments in the game where she seemed to get "picked last" or disregarded or whatever.

Edit: And I seem to recall she had some foster parents once but "it didn't work out" - perhaps she was rejected then, too.

Yet she keeps her head held high and continues moving forward. It's this aspect of it which would've been interesting to explore in further detail.

"Sir Knight, I must bit you farewell."
    Nice landing Ward...

Quistis "Do you know about Zell's famous incident?"
"He was in a hurry, took a sharp and landed in the women's bathroom."

Irvine "Wow, can I hold your grandfather's gun?"
    Zell "Well, ok"
    moments later
Zell "Hey! What are you doing?"
    Zell "Haa!!!"
    BANG
    Squall (I knew he would)

    1. Seifer's weakness when you battle him. I mean from the looks of the opening sequence battle with Squall you would've thought he's on par with Squall but when you battle with him at the end of Disc 1 it was a walk in the park.

    2. "Yo mama wear combat boots!" from Mr. Monkey. Is that supposed to be an insult? Maybe it's some kind of Japanese joke, I dunno.

    3. That Squall can't read Girl Next Door >.> He's a regular teenager he'd be tempted right?

    4. During Time Compression, when they fall into the ocean, they can actually talk! And when Rinoa and Squall were out in space, they could talk too! Are they superhuman or what?

did anyone else think it was odd that the missle control panel had an error ratio section i mean if i was to design it i wouldnt want to trust that a bunch of two bit military officials would not try to mess with it just for fun

I would say with the time compression the ocean and non-ocean were both there at the same time and so they could talk and breathe, or the ocean was just an illusion.

In space, they could communicate once they were touching as the sound waves would pass through the space suits - or maybe they could just use the space radio thing (however that works). I did think the roaring noise of the ragnarok when its "head" spun into view was a bit dumb though - in space no-one can hear you roar, and why is an inanimate object roaring anyway!

I think it's about the same time he got his T-Board confiscated. (I assume, since he was late)

The only way to hear it is when you select Quistis during the liberation of Balamb. (The same for Irvine)

By the way, didn't anyone noticed that space suit have microphones transmitter-receivers?

Maybe he (like me) hates porn. Not every 17 year old is perverted.

It was said in jest. But he indeedy doesn't like porn, judging the reaction he had to Irvine's old magazine at the FH XD

He gave 'the girl next door' to Zone.
    Not everyone likes XXX.

Excellent point. They rip on this in detail at Videogame Recaps, I believe. What kind of idiot designs a missile system where you can choose to make them totally inaccurate? And have a whole specific control just so you can increase your chances of missing the target? Now, I'm sure there could be a sensible reason - like allowing them to make their missile strikes less precise and more indiscriminate, for the purposes of instilling fear and terror in enemy populations - but that's quite a stretch, and there are better ways to achieve it. Like manually programming a bunch of random targets.

Well now thanks for that, I Googled it and can now kiss goodbye to several hours of productivity. Those are hilarious It's a shame it'll be like 2025 before they're completed.

Thing is, though I may be wrong I seem to remember that whatever you set that thing at, if your time runs out you get to see a pretty video of Balamb Garden going collapse-collapse-squish-squash-KABOOM. You also get it if you fail to set the error ratio. Either way it seems a bit dumb - at the end of the day it's the moving Garden which saves it, which is based on the other team and a different set of events.
