Psychic pokemon were only able to take out the likes of Gastly and Haunter because of their poison element, not because of the ghost element. Ghost actually pwnz psychic, as that bullepisode in the cartoon with Sabrina tried to make out, but the problem is that there are no good ghost attacks. Well, other than confuse ray but that hardly counts.

Psychotic, I'm well aware of the restrictions on the ownage of Pokemon in reference to Psychic and Ghost types.
In Red, Blue, Green, and Yellow, Psychic was superior to all Ghost types, why? Because of the Poison element, as you said. However, beginning in Gold, Silver, and Crystal, there are Ghost Pokemon without the Poison attribute (Misdraevus). Therefore, they used to be able to own all Ghost Pokemon. The move Shadow Ball was also added in the second generation.
Lick is Ghost type, and causes Paralyze. Night Shade is Ghost type, but does damage based on levels.
