Mineral oil, a few drops of that in your ear and it helps clean it. Or at least that is what my grandma would do. The reason you use oil is because wax is non-polar and water is polar so it does not work. There is a certain degree of attraction between non-polar molecules that allow the oil to break down the wax (in other words "like dissolves like").

EDIT: I just use Q-tips though after the shower. :/
