Thread: Surds.

    Surds.

It is a mathematical term. Do you like Surds? can you understand them?

I had a Maths exam today, and the most eviliest Surds questioned was waiting for me at the end of the paper. It was the Surface area of something, so width x height x depth, and you had to leave your answer as a√2 with a being an interger. It was bloody awful.
    I had √2 x √4 x √1/2. It was the fraction that threw me.

    an example of Surds:
    (1 + √3) × (2 - √8)
    = 2 - √8 + 2√3 - √24
    = 2 - 2√2 + 2√3 - 2√6

Ever get left nasty exam questions at the end of the paper? or any nasty ones at all?

    Another nasty one was doing forumulas ;_;
P = kh or something like that. One of those came up too

Does math make you happy? It should, but it looks like it doesn't.

I think we call 'em radicals. They're okay. Not something I was too fond of during my first unit of math this year.

Ohh, you meant Radicals. Also known as x (number) root.

Yes, I do. They are among the easiest numbers to manipulate.

Thats the thing, I DID find Surds easy, maybe its the way exams word them, but that question totally threw me.

I used to love surds, I found them nice and easy. I think they leave the nasty ones until the end all the time, I can't really recall any of the exam questions I've had.....I tend to repress the whole exam experience...I'm sure there were a few in AS maths though.

Math makes me happy. I regularly square root my polygon.

Oh THAT'S what a radical is!

I thought it was some kind of random thing that doesn't exist in our curriculums, but it's surds

I like them okay. They're easy.

It would appear that Surd is a European name. The only thing I've ever heard is "Radical."
