It's not much trouble, really. When you reply to a thread, checkout the "Thread Subscription" text box below the posting field.
And if you want a new post notification for <i>every</i> thread that you have posted in, you can also go to your User CP > Edit Options > and choose Instant email notification for your Default Thread Subscription Mode.
