Is there supposed to be something behind the head of the bed? I'm stuck trying to figure out the point of the memo and CD case, and what I should use the battery on.

The URL on the memo gives you a number you'll need later for a safe, the CD case has no use. Yeah, there's a metal bar behind it, lift the pillow and click the part right under it. The battery goes in the box when you get both rings and the metal bar placed on it.
