Unequiping characters

I am playing FFiv on the PS2 and cannot figure out how to unequip party members before I lose them. Please help

Unequipping a character in FFIV is similar to equipping a character. The only difference is that instead of selecting the new item to equip, you select an empty slot in your inventory to move the equipped item to.
