There's just no winning with you is there?Actually, their intention wasn't to win, it was to get all of the other Greek city-states organized enough to fight off the Persians, which is the end result of that war: the Greek (city-states) won.
So, in essence, they did claim victory with a sacrifice. Not the same as failure.
