I've had an idea on a leveling system for a few years now.
This is how it goes:
Characters start out with exactly one "Level Bar" in their status screen.
This Level Bar is placed on the stat you want to level up.
As you level up, you eventually obtain more Level Bars (you'll have about five of them at LV99), and thus you can level up more stats in one go.
For example, if you want to make a character a powerhouse, you just need to have him/her level up the Strength stat; you can also invest in Defense.
The stats level up in the exactly same way as the characters themselves, i.e. they need experience points; in other words, there exist terms such as "Strength LV5" in this game.
As you level up in the battles, you'll get a message such as "Clodo's Strength gained a Level", "Clodo gained a Level Bar", and so on.
