At home we have 1.5 mbps DSL, with a pretty ty 30 kb/s upload speed. I'll be moving into an apartment pretty soon, and I think we're going to get either 5 or 10 mbps cable. I don't know what kind of real speed I'll get out of that, though, since it's probably not as good as they advertise and will be split between my housemates.

Hmm... is it? It'd seem logical, but I haven't ever seen a 64k modem. 52ks on the other hand are everywhere.*shrug*
Analogue modems have a maximum connection rate of 56kbps, but if you have an ISDN phone line, which is fully digital, you can get 64k. Now this seems like a relatively small increase in speed, but you gotta keep in mind that analogue connections sometimes get connected at lower than 56k, for example 48k or 42k, depending on for example the quality of the phone lines. ISDN always give you 64k, and never slows down. It also allows you to bundle two ISDN connection and get 128k. The technology is also synchronous, unlike ADSL.

This technology was somewhat interesting a while before ADSL exploded in availability, because it gave you two phone lines, one for calling and one for internet. Though as I said earlier, you could make your computer use both at the same time for a speed boost, but that would count as making two phone calls at once, thus normally double the cost too. But seeing as ADSL also allowed you to use your phone while on the internet, this didn't remain a good argument for getting ISDN. Before ADSL was available though, ISDN practically meant a 30-50% increase in speed compared to analogue modems, plus two phone lines, and a few lesser features such as displaying the caller's number and sending SMS messages to the mobile network.

    It's lying to me dammit!

I usually download things at at least 30 MB when my comp's running slow!

It's too late for me to do proper math but I'm fairly sure this thread is 70+ years old. Generally we don't post in threads past the three month expiration date, so um...
