In the end it's all up to you Bertie. You should check out Sword of the New World's beta that's currently going on. Graphics are amazing, and I really like the interface and controls -- but I haven't played enough to get into the combat system.
Anyways. Tarutaru's are a good incentive to play, but if you don't like them, then I don't know what you've got.

This thread makes me wish I had a credit card.
Looking at it from a point of view.
it would take a bit of effort to transfer every single thing your character has and put all of those things onto another server.
you can however choose where to create your character for free.
The battle system for FFXI is going to be changed this summer, so that's something to look foward to. I fear for the length of the update though...

EDIT:On topic however, stay the hell away it'll draw you in and take away your sleep =/
New expansion in Winter 'Wings of a Goddes', involving time travel of some form and new spells for every job (that's all I know). Also, the game has so much content you'll never be out of things to do, FFXI is eternal! ETERRRNAL!!
