We must remember that the male characters (except Cid) are all 17-19, so their voices may or may not have reached the deepness that puberty will eventually take them. I however did like David Boreanez as Squall. If he spoke a little higher in FFVIII it would be perfect.
most american boys have their voices by the time they're 16/17, I've noticed
