Do I need to play the original Shadow Hearts and Shadow Hearts: Covenant in order to understand the story of Shadow Hearts: From the New World?

No it has nothing to do with the older games except for an obscure reference here and there. It isn't really a good game though and not as good as the first two and koudelka, imo. The first shadow hearts is a classic.

I didnt even know there was a shadow hearts 3 coming out lol, needless to say I have played the original and covenant but I would highly recomend them to anyone as they are both great games.

No. You don't need to play Shadow Hearts Or Shadow Hearts: Covenant to understand SH:FtNW. I personally really enjoyed all three of the games and Koudelka but I thought that this one was better than SH:C
