    Default Lyrical masterpieces

What lyrics really stuck out for you in any song you've heard? I must say, the one song that did that for me was Blue Oyster Cult's Astronomy, especially this one part:

"The clock strikes twelve and moondrops burst
Out at you from their hiding place?
Like acid and oil on a madman's face
His reasons tend to fly away

Like lesser birds on the four winds, yeah
    Like silver scrapes in May
Now the sands become a crust
And most of you have gone away, then you're gone away"

    and from the same song:

"Four winds at the four winds bar
Two doors locked and windows barred
One door left to take you in
The other one just mirrors it"

    and,once again,from the same song:
"Ooh, in hellish glare and inference
    The other one's a duplicate
    The queenly flux, eternal light
Or the light that never warms"

What are your favorite song lyrics?

Thanks to Reno is my man for the awesome siggy!!

My first album had no famous guest appearances
the outcome, I'm was crowned the best lyricist
many years on this professional level
why would you question who's better?
the World is still mine, tattoos real
with "God's Son" across the belly, the boss of rap
you saw me in Belly with thoughts like that
to take it back to Africa, I did it with Biggie
Me and 2Pac were soldiers of the same struggle
You lames should huddle, your teams shook y'all feel
the wrath of a killer, 'cause this is my football field
Throwin' passes from a barrel, shoulder pads, apparel
but the Q.B. don't stand for no quarterback
every word is like a sawed-off blast
'cause y'all all soft and I'm the black hearse
that came to haul y'all ass in
it's for the hood by the corner store
many try, many die, come at Nas if you want a war.
    get it bloody.

What if there was no light.
    Nothing wrong, nothing right.
What if there was no time?
    And no reason or rhyme?
    What if you should decide
That you don't want me there by your side.
That you don't want me there in your life.

What if I got it wrong?
    And no poem or song..
Could put right what I got wrong,
Or make you feel I belong
    What if you should decide
That you don't want me there by your side
That you don't want me there in your life.

    Oooooh, that's right
Let's take a break jump over the side
    Oooooh, that's right
How can you know it if you don't even try?
    Oooooh, that's right

    Every step that you take
    Could be your biggest mistake
It could bend or it could break
But that's the risk that you take
    What if you should decide
That you don't want me there in your life.
That you don't want me there by your side.

    Oooooh, that's right
Let's take a breath jump over the side.
    Oooooh, that's right
How can you know it when you don't even try?
    Oooooh, that's right

    Oooooh, that's right
Let's take a breath jump over the inside
    Oooooh, that's right
You know that darkness always turns into light
    Oooooh, that's right..

    What about sunrise
    What about rain
    What about all the things
That you said we were to gain...
    What about killing fields
    Is there a time
    What about all the things
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the blood we've shed before
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores?

    Aaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaah

What have we done to the world
    Look what we've done
    What about all the peace
That you pledge your only son...
    What about flowering fields
    Is there a time
    What about all the dreams
That you said was yours and mine...
Did you ever stop to notice
All the children dead from war
Did you ever stop to notice
The crying Earth the weeping shores

    Aaaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaaah

    I used to dream
I used to glance beyond the stars
Now I don't know where we are
Although I know we've drifted far

    Aaaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaaaah
    Aaaaaaaaaaah Aaaaaaaaaaaah

    Hey, what about yesterday
    (What about us)
    What about the seas
    (What about us)
    The heavens are falling down
    (What about us)
    I can't even breathe
    (What about us)
    What about the bleeding Earth
    (What about us)
    Can't we feel its wounds
    (What about us)
    What about nature's worth
    (ooo,ooo)
    It's our planet's womb
    (What about us)
    What about animals
    (What about it)
    We've turned kingdoms to dust
    (What about us)
    What about elephants
    (What about us)
    Have we lost their trust
    (What about us)
    What about crying whales
    (What about us)
    We're ravaging the seas
    (What about us)
    What about forest trails
    (ooo, ooo)
    Burnt despite our pleas
    (What about us)
    What about the holy land
    (What about it)
    Torn apart by creed
    (What about us)
    What about the common man
    (What about us)
    Can't we set him free
    (What about us)
    What about children dying
    (What about us)
    Can't you hear them cry
    (What about us)
    Where did we go wrong
    (ooo, ooo)
    Someone tell me why
    (What about us)
    What about babies
    (What about it)
    What about the days
    (What about us)
    What about all their joy
    (What about us)
    What about the man
    (What about us)
    What about the crying man
    (What about us)
    What about Abraham
    (What was us)
    What about death again
    (ooo, ooo)
    Do we give a damn

    Keane, "Atlantic":
I hope all my days will be lit by your face
I hope all the years will hold tight our promises
I don't want to be old and sleep alone
An empty house is not a home
I don't want to be old and feel afraid

I don't want to be old and sleep alone
An empty house is not a home
I don't want to be old and feel afraid

And if I need anything at all
I need a place that's hidden in the deep
Where lonely angels sing you to your sleep
Though all the world is broken
I need a place where I can make my bed
A lover's lap where I can lay my head
'Cause now the room is spinning
    The day's beginning
    Rooney, "Blueside":
The colors have built up in my mind
    They're bleeding through my heart
And nobody knows that they exist
    Look at my bursted veins
Now do you see the red in me
It's a sign for the end

Only the end of the red
Will show you my blue side

I've been given my brush and plate
But where will I paint my life
And will the buyer in the sky
    Believe in what I dream
And it's so hard for me to explain
    What I will miss
    To myself

    Until it got so warm
That none of us could sleep
    And all the styrofoam
    Began to melt away
We tried to find some words
    To aid in the decay
But none of them were home
    Inside their catacomb
    A million ancient bees
    Began to sting our knees
While we were on our knees
    Praying that disease
Would leave the ones we love
    And never come again

    On the radio
    We heard November Rain
    That solo's really long
    But it's a pretty song
    We listened to it twice
    'Cause the DJ was asleep

    This is how it works
    You're young until you're not
    You love until you don't
    You try until you can't
    You laugh until you cry
    You cry until you laugh
    And everyone must breathe
    Until their dying breath

No, this is how it works
    You peer inside yourself
You take the things you like
And try to love the things you took
And then you take that love you made
    And stick it into some
    Someone else's heart
    Pumping someone else's blood
    And walking arm in arm
You hope it don't get harmed
    But even if it does
You'll just do it all again

    And on the radio
    You hear November Rain
    That solo's awful long
    But it's a good refrain
    You listen to it twice
    'Cause the DJ is asleep

    (oh oh oh)
    On the radio
On the radio - uh oh
On the radio - uh oh

Goodness, 9 posts and nobody's bothered to quote Rick Astley? There is a god.

Weird Al songs are usually quite good on the lyrics front (not quite sure if I'd call them masterpieces though).
Not my words Carol, the words of Top Gear magazine.

Even though I don't really like rap, I'm gonna have to say that One Mic by Nas is an awesome song. Great lyrics, I think anyway.

Oo my little pretty one, pretty one
When you gonna give me some time, Sharona?
Oo you make my motor run, my motor run
Gun it coming off of the line, Sharona
Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up with a touch of the younger kind
    My-ee ey-ee by-ee ahee ah woo!
    Ma ma ma my Sharona

Come a little closer, over here
Close enough to look in my eyes, Sharona
Keep a little mystery, kissin' me
Runnin' down the length of my thigh, Sharona
Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up from a touch of the younger kind
    My-ee ey-ee by-ee ahee ah woo!
    Ma ma ma my Sharona
    Ma ma ma my Sharona

When ya gonna get to me, get to me
Is it just a matter of time, Sharona
Is it a destiny, a destiny
Or is it just a game in my mind, Sharona
Never gonna stop, give it up, such a dirty mind
I always get it up from a touch of the younger kind
    My-ee ey-ee by-ee ahee ah woo!
Ma ma ma ma ma ma ma ma
Myee ey-ee by-ee ahee ah woo!
    Ma ma ma my Sharona
    Ooooh my Sharona

How could anyone not be fond of that?

For me it's pretty much anything by Tool, but this one in particular:

Black then white are all i see in my infancy.
red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
    lets me see.
as below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn beyond the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

Over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition, missing opportunities and I must
Feed my will to feel my moment drawing way outside the lines.

Black then white are all i see in my infancy.
red and yellow then came to be, reaching out to me.
lets me see there is so much more and
beckons me to look thru to these infinite possibilities.
as below, so above and beyond, I imagine
drawn outside the lines of reason.
Push the envelope. Watch it bend.

over thinking, over analyzing separates the body from the mind.
Withering my intuition leaving opportunities behind.
Feed my will to feel this moment urging me to cross the line.
Reaching out to embrace the random.
Reaching out to embrace whatever may come.

    I embrace my desire to
    I embrace my desire to
feel the rhythm, to feel connected enough to step aside and weep like a widow
to feel inspired to fathom the power, to witness the beauty,
    to bathe in the fountain,
    to swing on the spiral
    to swing on the spiral
to swing on the spiral of our divinity and still be a human.

With my feet upon the ground I move myeslf between the sounds and open wide to suck it in.
I feel it move across my skin.
I'm reaching up and reaching out. I'm reaching for the random or what ever will bewilder me.
    what ever will bewilder me.
And following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been.
We'll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one's been.
    Spiral out. Keep going.
    Spiral out. Keep going.
    Spiral out. Keep going.
    Spiral out. Keep going.
    Spiral out. Keep going.
