Why do people pair Auron with Rikku?

Is it just me, or is it that in most FFX fanfics and other general areas of the fandom, people like to put Rikku and Auron together?

Is it because they actually think the two make a good couple, or just because Rikku and Auron get left out when Yuna gets paired with Tidus and Wakka gets paired with Lulu?

...What do you think about them?

There is stuff in the game if you want to see it; Rikku is there when Auron gets his celestial, for example. Also, in X-2, Rikku is wearing a lot of Auron's armor and swords, just like Yuna has a lot of stuff that used to be worn by Tidus. I also think people just like to have a pair for Rikku, just because she is so popular and people don't like to think of her as being alone.

I think Rikku and Auron could be the classic romantic couple: older mysterious if rather gruff man attracts lively, optimistic younger woman. I don't know about everybody putting them together though. Eg in fan fiction sites, Rikku/Auron pairings seem rare, and you get lots of comments about it being pervy.

I didn't notice about the armour in X2, that's really interesting! Of course they don't immediately hit it off. When Rikku says, "You don't get me at all, do you?" (in the Thunder Plains Agency) she's talking mostly to Auron, after his comment, "She's worse than the storm!" But that happens a lot in romantic novels.

I don't like Auron/Rikku. For one thing, Rikku is a minor and Auron is 35( I think) and dead. Even in fiction, pedophilia is gross. I'm more of a Rikku/Gippal guy.
