Curious. Is there such a thing as better than 20/20 vision? If not, what do they mean? Do they give them some kind of new-age telescopic vision? X-Ray vision? A third eye, allowing 20/20/20 vision?

It is possible to have better than 20/20 vision (naturally and with corrective lenses). It would involve the latter number being less than 20 (20/15, for instance). It just means you have even better eyesight than normal.

"20/20", from what I've heard, is not some perfect vision that cannot be surpassed; it's just what's normal for human vision. Many animals, for instance, have far superior vision.

Yeah, 20/20 is just normal. This means you can sit 20 feet away from an eye chart and see what a normal human would see.

so at 20/17 you can stand 20 feet from the chart, and see what a normal person sees at 17 feet from the chart.

    It is very crude.

Why don't they have laser surgery set to 20/15 instead of set to 20/20, then?

Cause 20/20 is a safer bet. if your eye hardware is good you are about garenteed 20/20. The rest actually has to do with the innards of your brain, from what I understand. Vision is 90% eyes, 10% processed by brain. your eyes actually see images upside down, your brain flips them. etc etc.

Probably because the more the change, the more dangerous the surgery, especially if it goes beyond what's "normal" for our eyes. Normal is normal for a reason - because it's the natural fit of the rods and such in our eyes.

I never knew what 20/20 vision was until this thread. Last time I went to the opticians, I just got told that my long sightedness (new word) was fantastic
If the surgery makes you see better do you think someone with 20/20 vision could get operated on and get better vision??

I imagine part of it has to do with the "potential" of the eye. It's probably hard to get some people to 20/20 vision, while others can improve beyond that, like 25/20, with very little danger.

My dad has weird vision. He's blind in one eye from untreated lazy eye, but his other eye is better than 20 because it has to overcompensate.

Last time I did that chart thing where you cover an eye or whatever they said afterwards to my mom I had 20/15 eye vision, which is apparently better. I guess theres numbers at the end of the chart that say "20/20" and if you can read that line you have 20/20, etc.

Ah, that's how it works. Despite having abysmal vision since I was young, I never got around to learning just how the number system works.[q=Khaotic]I guess theres numbers at the end of the chart that say "20/20" and if you can read that line you have 20/20, etc.[/q]See bipper's post.

yeah the vision number thing is funky...when i was a kid i thought each 20 meant the vision level of either eye, but then i wondered which was which.....so i looked it up.

apparently i have 'perfect' 20/20 which actually means average.

i first heard this from an acuvue advantax commercial. it was saying that 20/20 was the norm but that these lenses could up you to 20/15 because the lens was carved like a magnifier

Raistlin has the most superior vision of all.
