Sim City 4 is one of my favorites. Pretty addicting.
DOOM is an absolute must: I think It'll run on any PC (though I know nothing of its Vista compatibility; the currently available PC version was originally for Windows 95 after all). Don't let anyone discourage you about what the aiming control is like, it's still one of the most pointlessly fun blast-em-to-hell-ups you'll ever play. And if you really have a problem with it you can always download ZDoom, a source port which allows mouse control.
Duke Nukem 3D Atomic Edition as well, if you can find it. This one DOES allow mouse aiming, and there are also plenty of good source ports that'll make it work.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Best FPS of the past three years.
There's also World in Conflict open beta going on if you want a simple, streamlined RTS without all of the resource gathering crap.
Another vote for S.T.A.L.K.E.R. It's very engrossing.
Also Morrowind and Oblivion, obviously. Arena and Daggerfall if you can deal with dated graphics.
Diablo II is good for repeatedly playing through.
[q=Hsu]PCSX 2 is pretty far along, though.[/q]
It is pretty far along for an emulator of that generation, but it's still pretty average. I get around 25fps with frameskipping on Windows and it's quite unstable. I had a hard time even getting the Linux version to build, and when I did it ran like crap. The worst part is the compatibility list though.
I think it'll be another year before we have decent PS2 emulation.
Add in Microsoft Flight Simulator too.
You'll not be stuck for great games - as long as your PC fits the system requirements.![]()
