What's up with all the devil summoner hating?!
Shin Megami Tensei: Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army is an awesome game! It has quirks and kinks, yes, but it's still a great variation on the MegaTen theme. Fighting in semi-real time with mythological demons was a blast and involved plenty of the strategic teamwork we MegaTen fans have come to expect. This title also cooks up a very interesting ambience by blending 1920's Japan with the mature and occult themes characteristic of the series. Also, as far as gameplay goes, you CAN control the demons' actions directly despite what some reviewers say!! While fighting as Raidou you can't control their movements (although this isn't entirely true either, as you can teleport them to your side at any time and thus kind of force them to go where you want on the battlefield) BUT while exploring in solo demon mode you fight directly as the demon alone! You control its movements, skill use, everything- this gives you a level of control over your demons and an understanding of what they can really do that is unprecedented in the series since it's hard to get a real feel for the way a demon's particular physique helps or hinders its attack and defense in a turn-based medium. This is only the beginning of the fun, what with the demon's flavorful commentary and the pleasantly puzzling investigation which requires the creative use of your demons' field talents to solve. It's tough to find now, but every fan of the Shin Megami Tensei franchise should play this game, particularly with the revamped and totally overhauled (i.e. even better) sequel coming out this may!
