Most English people I've encountered say an. And it's not correct to add an apostrophe to the word either.

I always thought that an apostrophe represented that letters are missing, like a blank in order to replace the real thing. As if you were to take a book, and replace it with an empty journal, and the journal's size would always be the same, no matter how big the book. The emptiness of our world is all represented with an apostrophe.
