You have to use the password to shutdown the machine and save her.
The password is her name. (SPOILER)The only name you can make on the controller is LARA, so you hit L, A, R, A buttons as the password.

well....i have a playstation..and i didnt save her. i also saved over so i cant load back.
so my question is, is there a way to try again if you fail the first time?
no, the red time gate only appears during the campout, so you only get one chance to save Luccas Mom.
Afraid not. This is why I always keep at least 2 or 3 save files per game with a couple of events' lag between each.
I messed up the first time myself. I thought it was such a good idea for a little sidestory in a game about time travelling. Very touching.

i messed up my first time also, i got the timing wrong and ended up hitting ALARA which of course caused me to fail that part, but i learned from that mistake and have gotten it right every time since... the best thing to do is reset and try again or forget it if you saved after the failure and try again on the next playthrough...
