I found it really just as repetetive, tbh. All it really meant was that there some weapons that had spiffy graphics, and there was the occasional environment-based way of doing a fellow in. I'm prolly disappointed because I was expecting something that was revolutionary, given the reviews. I went into every fight looking for some clever way of taking the bad guys out. You wouldn't believe how much time I took just stalking the first few Big Daddies I met, trying to look for some clever way of doing them in, only to find that the cleverest it got was choosing the right ammo. After those first few I stopped looking.
