Gameplay-wise, I think FFIII wins because of its job system. Both games have interesting fantasy worlds with lots of old-school elements. While both games are good, I still prefer FFIV to FFIII.

When is it said that Luneth, Arc, Refia and Ingus (or the NES characters) are 17 years old? I was always wondering how old they are, but I could never find out the answer.

Now that you mentioned it, it's a bit funny, really. I mean, FFs II, VI, VIII and X are all FF games that I don't like as much as some of the other FFs. FFVII and FFIX seem story-driven while FFXII seems gameplay-driven, though, so I don't think the even numbered FFs always have focus on the storyline.
the argument is a bit of a stretch, but i didn't mean story-driven as opposed to gameplay-driven, I meant more like in the even ones there are set good guys and bad guys and it's very focused on that story, whereas in the odd ones there are many different groups sometimes overlapping in their sides and it's more about the world itself than it is about specific actors.

I like both games very much, so this will be difficult, but nostalgia will most likely be the deciding factor. So IV will win for me. (sorry Elpizo )

Each time I play through the game, it brings me back to the days where I stayed up late reading the instruction manual, failing test in school cause I decided that Cecil taking his trial to redeem himself was more important than algebra, and I remember finishing the game around Christmas and watching the fantastic ending with nothing more than the hue of the Christmas lights and the TV to illuminate the room for me (to this day, I still always get into the mood to play IV around the holiday season).

This is not to say that I don't have wonderful memories of FFIII (of anything, it confirmed the fact that I prefer the older FFs to the newer ones). As for the story debate, I think this goes back to what I learned from my debates in the XII forums: The majority of FF fans prefer character driven pieces and could care less about the fate of the world. III has a wonderful and deep story but it's not a character driven piece like IV was, which is why people prefer IV. I also learned that people prefer sappy melodrama and stupid Hollywood effects over good storytelling in the XII forums

It's hard for me to choose between III or IV, I guess I'll say III.

I prefer III, simply because it doesn't have that one point half way through the game where it turns into a massive grindfest (WOR).

It's not half way but I had to grind pretty hard in the original before I entered the final dungeon. I seem to remember that was fixed somewhat in the DS version though.

I prefer FFIII DS to any of the other versions of FFIV due to the rebalanced (and nigh on perfected) job system. The original versions are too close to call.

    You are very confused.

Final Fantasy IV has a very special place in my heart that I'm afraid III, even at its best, could never eclipse.

For me, there is no contest.
