Lightning
Lightning, as seen in the Eł trailerFinal Fantasy XIII's main character is a young woman with strawberry-blonde hair. She uses the codename "Lightning" to hide her true identity, though she does not know it herself. She is the Crystal's chosen one (we do not know which Crystal), on a mission to destroy the floating city Cocoon.
The two yellow stripes on Lightning's left shoulder symbolize her rank and social status. Her weapon, which can be shifted between a sword and firearm mode at will, bares many similarities to Final Fantasy VIII's gunblades. Lightning can also use gravity as a tool and weapon. As seen in the E3 2006 trailer, she can defy gravity, often levitating. When in this trance, sparks fly around her body. She was also seen wielding dual guns inside the train in the E3 2006 trailer.
Character designer Tetsuya Nomura was asked to create a "female version of Cloud from Final Fantasy VII", and has described her as "not very feminine". which breaks Final Fantasy Tradition of a feminine hero.
Unnamed Man
The unnamed blond as shown at the Jump Festa convention.A blond, bandanna-wearing male who rides a motorcycle and wields a gun (possibly a sniper rifle). In the Jump Festa 2006 trailer, he is shown coming to Lightning's aid when she is outnumbered by soldiers. Very little is known about him. He is currently nicknamed "Mr. 33cm", which is supposed to be his shoe size.
Unnamed Girl
Seen in the TGS07 trailer, she is a pinkish-haired girl wielding a bow who seems to be an ally of Lightning. Nothing else is known at this point.
Supposedly a 3rd playable character was revealed at the TGS '07 for FF XIII
