Default AdBot: Search And Employ (Or Spam Is Good With The Right Sides)

People (bots?) often spam forums with ads for drugs, porn, and whatnot. Now here, due to the ever active mods and admins, you rarely see said spam. However, at MSB, the mods are a lot slower due to the forum being slower, and there can be five or six on the forum before a mod gets around to deleting them.

The question I'm asking is, why do people (bots?) do this? Obviously no one ever clicks on the links, and rarely does anyone even go to the thread. This seems to be a waste of time, what with signing up, posting, linking, and whathaveyou, only to make one post that never gets read and be banned minutes later.

I don't know. It makes no sense to me. I know I wouldn't waste my time with an advertisement no one would ever read. So, why? Are they naïve? Do they actually believe this is an effective form of advertising? Or do they just not care and don't have anything better to do with their time? Or is it something else?

    Discuss.

There's always some naive optimist out there that thinks they really are about to get a Rolex for 10% of the price in a completely legal and official way from a respectable company.

Also, it's not really that we're quick, it's that we just don't get that many of those threads around here. I think it's because we're well moderated in that we cut out a lot of the 'dirty' talk around EoFF which spammers pick up on (case in point: Aiyon), and also because we make good use of vB's security updates and features.

I had to delete like ten a day when I modded an RO forums. Sometimes there were pictures! Disgusting pictures >_>; EoFF does seem exceptionally lucky in this aspect. ^_^

I sure hope that's a joke. At first, I was like, "Promo Bag World? What the hell?" Then I decided it was probably a joke based on the way you spoke to me and where the link led. I guess I should have figured it out before clicking on the link, but I was doing so much at once, it just didn't occur to me to question it. I did, however, wonder why you spoke to me in that manner.

So yeah. I was slow. But it's not my fault. I have an appointment in ten minutes for which I should have left already and I was trying to finish some stuff first.

Plz, it was nothing you aren't already familiar with.

Seriously though, spam works because the investment is low and all they need is a small percentage to profit. It's the bestest way ever.

Fool's Gold gets inundated with them, but that's Fool's Gold.

I do like the lack of them because they are rather irritating. It's not that I can't spot what's a spam post and what isn't, but because they're just generally an annoyance. There should be a Rentokill for forums xD

Fool's Gold has a crappy CAPTCHA and they don't require e-mail response to get activated.

EoFF, on the other hand, has a decent CAPTCHA and they require e-mail activation.

This greatly reduces the # of bots that can sign up here. Fool's Gold is kind of an open season for spamming the place up :P

They have nothing to lose and everything to gain on spamming links, so that's probably the reasoning behind it.

Wouldn't know to be honest. It's a good 5 years since I joined Fool's Gold.

They aren't programmed to feel the cold sting of rejection.
