Telling people what your roles is, is pretty much the same as secretly letting some of the people at a Poker table know what cards you have.

There is a difference between bluffing (which is essential to the game) at the table and surreptitiously texting a friend and asking what cards they have. I mean, obviously someone can be playing the game like DK did and tricking people, but I'm guessing that if you contact a friend playing the game and they WEREN'T Mafia, then they'd tell you their role if you bugged them enough and that's no good.
