About the only thing I like in FFVIII is the gameplay. I enjoy the junction system, despite the fact that it's extremely easy to abuse. The game also sports one of the better soundtracks in the series.

On the other hand, I feel that the story is lacking. Whether or not one is a fan of the game, one must admit that a majority of the cast is left fairly underdeveloped. All of the characters have potential to be very good, but their development is limited to a single event, and then they're all but abandoned in favor of the love story (which I personally found contrived).

FFVIII is one of the those love it or hate it games. It's worth a shot. Be sure to at least give it until half way through the second disc. By then you'll have a good idea of where the plot is heading, and you'll undoubtedly have a good feel for the game play.

P.S. The triple triad card game is freaking amazing.
