I had a very similar view as you when it came to him, but recently I was dragged along to his concert by my girlfriend and my god... he is an absolutely amazing guitarist. Pop is pretty much the genre you use to convey what is being played on the radio. Which does not equate to all music, as you stated. There's so much more music and different genre's out there that the masses don't even know about.
